Raiders of the Lost Moss
Written By, Robert Littal, Head BSO

Let's get this out of the way first: Randy Moss can be
an ass (no pun intended).  He says some really stupid
things (and let me quote)... “I play when I want to
play”, and he does some really stupid things such as
leaving the field with 2 seconds to go in the game
against the Redskins.  Randy Moss has been called a
lot of things, a thug, a distraction, lazy, a
cancer, well, you get the idea.  So it wasn't’t a huge
surprise that he will be traded to the Raiders, we all
knew that. But what is a huge surprise is how little
the Vikings got in return for him.  A first round pick
(7th overall), Napoleon Harris (who?) and a late round
pick for Randy Moss?  Are you kidding me? No wonder
the Vikings always falter down the stretch. They are
horrible at closing a deal!

Randy Moss is the most feared player in the game.  Ask
any defensive coordinator in the game today (of course
off the record) and ask him which WR he doesn’t want
to see on Sunday.  Trust me the answer won’t be Marvin
Harrison or Terrell Owens it is going to be Moss.

Let me clear up some misconceptions about Moss.  If
you listen to Joe Buck and Cris Collingsworth in last
year's playoffs you would be under the impression that
Moss was slacking big time. But the truth of the
matter was that Moss never fully recovered from the
hamstring injury he suffered in mid-season and on top
of that he was battling a very severe ankle sprain.
Now similar to what Terrell Owens went through during
Super Bowl week, he didn't point out that he was
playing hurt, they decided to focus on his off the
field issues.  Secondly, Moss is a distraction, but
does that cause the team to win and lose games?  If it
does then the Vikings are a sorry assed team, because
one man should not have that type effect on an entire
squad, and if he does then that squad is filled with
weak-minded individuals.

Finally the Vikings haven’t lost because of Moss, they
have lost cause they have a horrible defense that
gives up a lot of points.  If they traded Moss for
Lavar Arrington, Ed Hartwell, or John Abraham then it
would make some sense, but Napoleon Harris?  Harris is
a slightly above average player who won't change a
thing in Minnesota because frankly he is not a game
changer.  The 1st round pick they received, I heard
through various sources, is going to be used on WR,
which means you basically traded Moss for Mike
Williams/Braylon Edwards (who are either going to be
boom or bust) and Napoleon Harris. Sound like a fair
deal to you?  It sounds more to me that the Vikings
are betting that without Moss in their locker room
they will have a better team.  If that is the case,
then that is a dangerous game they are playing.  I
would rather have 22 Randy Mosses than 22 Larry Izzos
if you know what I mean.

No one knows how Moss will mesh with the Raiders.
Moss is an enigma that way, but the one thing you can
count on is he will produce.  Regardless if you like
him or not, the man has put up monster numbers every
year he has been in the league.  As for the Vikings,
one of two things will happen: they will free-fall
which a lot of teams do when the trade their marquee
player or they will come together with the “we will
show them win can win without this loser mentality”
similar to the Boston Red Sox after they didn't’t get
Alex Rodriguez Yankees.  I do have concerns about
Daunte Culpepper, most great QB’s have a security
blanket (Manning to Harrison for example. During his
entire career, he has had Moss and the spotlight will
be squarely on him to take the Vikings to the promise
land. And if he doesn’t, he will take the blame they
used to give to Moss.  Remember the Vikings have been
involved in blockbuster trades before.  They traded
for Hershel Walker and that didn’t quite work out that
well for them and I don’t think this one will either.
