My friends at Youbeenblinded.com sent me an email about Dallas Cowboys Tight End Martellus Bennett.
You might remember Marty B from "Hard Knocks" on HBO last year (keep it high and tight) or from his god awful freestyle rap on YouTube that got him fined by the Cowboys or his somewhat humorous blogs for the Dallas Morning News (the one about his boy ditching his date at the movies was very funny) .
When I saw the title of the email:
I just knew this wasn't going to end well. I am not going to go into detail about what is going on you can watch for yourself, but I am going to try to explain this in a way that everyone can understand.
Martellus is young. He is young with some money, a lot of time on his hands and a very exuberant personality. I am 100% sure he doesn't think he is doing anything wrong. To him he is just goofing around having fun.
It is hard for me to be upset with him because I when I was his age I did a lot of silly stuff myself.
The big difference though is if anyone else does this it is just a blip on the radar. When Martellus Bennett does it, it carries bigger significance.
Bennett plays for the Dallas Cowboys one of the most glamorized franchises in pro sports. When you are that high profile you simply cannot do a YouTube called the "Black Olympics" perpetuating stereotypes that African-Americans have been fighting for centuries.
You just have to be smarter than that. Doesn't matter if you are just playing around it just isn't a good look. There is a very fine line when people are laughing with you and people are laughing at you. Someone in his camp should have step in and said:
"Yeah this is funny, but probably something we shouldn't put on YouTube."
As someone told me a very long time ago every time as a black man you step out of the door you are not just representing yourself, you are representing your culture and all the people who came before you so can walk out of that door.

Just goes to show how some people can grow up, possibly know folk that have struggled thru some things, but they themselves, somehow totally missed what real black struggle is all about & how it injures souls around them. Bennett has obviously not been a victim of racist stereotypes, so its easy for him & his to patronize the exact settings. Its ignorance, its shameless buffoonery on his & his brother's part, exactly what racists love to use in speaking down on male black athletes, all horse muscle but no real brain power beyond the athleticism. Fools like Bennett shame progress, fortify prejudices, but sadly have no clue they're doing so. Its like that woman that's in the welfare office loudly berating a state worker about issues related to her "interest free" monetary assistance, yet she neglected to remove the gold rings from each finger, & not park or even drive the Lexus to the welfare office. Pitifully painful reminders of how too many black persons exactly like Bennett & that welfare queen lack thinking abilities, but perpetuate how not far from slavery to ignorance, lack of depth & serious education some blacks have actually gotten.

come on! the guy was bored and made a video about eating foods that everyone knows have been partial to black folks blacks and whites kid about racial crap like that to ease tension. rappers throwing cash (making it rain) , talking as though they have no education (ebonics), and putting half naked women in videos, and not tipping in restaurants doesn't bother ya'll but eating chicken and watemelon offends the hell out of you? does that make sense?
J third, i'm curious. what's is your struggle? there's a black president, scholarships, BET, etc. your struggle is over. guys like you that obsess about it is why there's tension. forigive. don't forget. but forgive. you were never a slave. you've never been denied right unless your older than 60. thank god for what you have now. study the full spectrum of history. learn all sides and tell your children that you are an american with rights like anyone else and to love his fellow man. getting offended by stupid little crap like eating chicken is why people think that you and people like you are whiners who cries about any thing that happens. think about how annoying it is to have someone constantly whining. you end up not listening to anything they have to say. pick your battles my friend
