shaq big witness.jpg:

Shaquille O'Neal was traded today to the Cleveland Cavs in exchange for Sasha Pavlovic, Ben Wallace, and 2nd round draft pick. With Dwight Howard becoming more dominant offensively, Shaq can help the Cavs greatly by defending Dwight Howard.
Shaq uses his size to disrupt opposing teams both physically and mentally. One of Shaq's greatest assets is the way he can get the leading shot blockers on the opposing team into foul trouble, which allows his teammates to take advantage and attack the hoop.

The 2009-10 season will once again be championship or bust for the Cavs. After failing to make the NBA Finals this season, Cleveland realizes that it must focus on how to beat the best teams in the league (in the playoffs) and Cleveland must feel that this move gives them the best opportunity to beat the best teams.

Shaq is a locker room leader. He is charismatic and intelligent so he will become the natural leader of the team. He has the experience and tools to lead a team to a championship so it would not be a surprise to see Lebron James give up leadership to Shaq even though Lebron is considered the superior player.

Unfortunately, Shaq does not share the spotlight. Shaq does not take a backseat to anyone, especially when he feels he is the best basketball player on the court. If the Cavs expect Shaq to submit to a secondary role for the benefit of Lebron James, then they may be in for some trouble. Regardless of how the public may feel about Lebron, Shaq has a big ego and loves attention (especially when it is positive).

Shaq may become the #1 option offensively for the Cavs because Shaq shoots such a high FG%. Shaq's offensive production has declined over the past 4 years, but this may be due mostly to his decline in minutes. But, in 30 minutes, Shaq may be able to average 20 points, which is extremely efficient. Shaq shoots 61% from the floor and 60% from the line. His turnovers are average for a player with his amount of touches. Shaq is STILL the most dominant player in basketball. When he is on the court, he provides the best chance to score, which is reflected in his FG%, and he also wears down opponents in ways not reflected in a stat sheet.

If Shaq becomes the #1 option, then the offense will run through Shaq instead of Lebron. If Shaq is not the first option, Shaq will want the ball and if he does not get it, he will demand the ball. If Shaq does not get the ball, he has the ability to tear a team apart. If Shaq does get the ball, the coach has to find a way to keep Lebron happy and to keep all the role players involved.

Remember how Terry Porter was fired in Phoenix after just half a season? Terry tried to mold his gameplan to fit Shaq, but the rest of the Suns players wanted to play run-n-gun with Steve Nash. It is important for everyone on the Cavs to get on the same page because if Lebron and Shaq both want to be top dog, then we may see the team implode like the 2009 Suns or the 2004 Lakers.

Shaq is criticized by many pundits for being lazy, but this harsh criticism may be unfair. So Shaq's lack of movement and hustle may be attributed to long term health, but most will characterize the lack of movement as laziness, especially since Shaq was more mobile with the same body size about ten years ago.

Shaq can be exploited defensively because he does not trust his mobility. He prefers to stay near the basket, which allows many open looks for the opposing team. The other Cav players must be willing to pick up the slack defensively, which means helping Shaq on pick and rolls, and pressuring teams before they can set up their pick and roll offense. The coach can request Shaq to play harder on defense, but that creates a risk because Shaq gets hurt more often when he runs hard. Shaq has had issues with his feet and his toes similar to Yao Ming. Forcing Shaq to exert unnecessary energy during the regular season may have dire consequences similar to Houston losing Yao Ming in the 2nd round after Yao had been healthy during the entire regular season.

In conclusion, the trade gives Cleveland a better chance to win a championship, but the current Cavs may have to change dramatically to best utilize Shaq. They may have to submit to his leadership in the locker room and they may have to incorporate Shaq into the offense as the #1 option. They will most likely have to improve on defense. Also, the Cavs will have to manage playing under a microscope because incorporating Shaq will put more attention on the Cavs.

"Shaq can be exploited defensively because he does not trust his mobility."

How do you know any of this stuff you write about???

wow... this is bad. Real bad. It's like you wanted to write your opinion on it, no matter how illogical it seems. Shaq is only concerned about his legacy, he deferred to Kobe in the late stages of games to get his first ring. He deferred to Wade to get his fourth. Now he's tied to Derek Fischer and Tim Duncan, along with Kobe with 4 rings.... if he gets 5, he wins. He thinks about his legacy.

LeBron is not going to defer to Shaq. He has been the leader of this team for almost a decade. Shaq is going to be the one to follow not lead.

this article was horribly written and the new pop-up on the site that changes the page so that u cant even read the horrible article is worse!!
