We all knew him for different things. Some of us knew him as that ridiculous left handed batter on the Mets from back in the day. Some of us remember him from the 3 titles he won with the Yankees in the late 90s. Some of us just knew him because hell, his last name was "Strawberry." But then we came to know of him as the druggie. Not steroids and anti-inflams, but ectasy and cocaine.


But just this past week, retired baseball player, Darryl Strawberry released his memoir, entitled " Straw: Finding My Way" a personal statement documenting his stories from baseball, drugs, women, sex and life. While Strawberry wasn't considered the best player in baseball, this book definitely defines him as one of the most interesting baseball players in recent memory.

Strawberry shares tidbits of his book and life in a recent interview at SportsRadioInterviews, notably telling listeners that he slept with somewhere between 1000 and 5000 women, more definitely towards the latter. Close to five thousand women? Ok, ok, it makes sense. I mean he's a star baseball player, you figure he can get with about 8-10 women a month. So...like 120 women a year? Wait, that still doesn't make sense.

That's just a lot of women, but he's still a poor man's Wilt Chamberlain...who claimed to slept with over 20,000 women.


Athletes are crazy, sometimes.

Here's a couple quick quotes from the radio interview:

On amphetamines:

"I think I popped at one time ten white crosses because my tolerance had got to a point where I needed them. I needed to take more because it wasn't having the effect that I needed to have. Once I reached that point of taking so many then I had to kick it up and I got to a point [where] I took ten white crosses. I drank a lot of coffee and I was wired as could be, I could see so clear, I could see the ball like it a beach ball coming in or something like that."

On whether he considers them "performance enhancing drugs":

"I think it's a little bit different than that. Greens were more of a speed action, getting the adrenaline flowing inside the body more than what they talk about the performance enhancing drugs today. It wasn't about body builders. Go back to the video tape and you'll see how skinny I was."

On whether he used steroids:

"No. I just never thought about it. In our era it didn't really exist as much as it did in the later years when the Canseco's started and stuff like that. That was a different time. Of course, had I been at the beginning of it, had it been in our era, of course. Are you kidding?"

Strawberry also talks about how getting into baseball, he just played. He didn't know much about the history, and for the longest time, had no idea who Willie Mays was. He just played the game, got caught up with the rockstar/superstar lifestyle, and eventually found his way out of it.

After hitting a pretty big roadblock, Strawberry found his road to redemption and now lives comfortably with his wife in St. Charles County, Missouri. Strawberry and his wife met at a drug recovery center, and have since founded the Darryl Strawberry Foundation, an organization dedicated to children with autism.
