Farewell Finger Swagger; Curtains Seem to Close for Deke...

It may not be official. It may not even be completely true, but last night, we may have lost one of the best and maybe even one of the most highly influential players in the NBA. In what seems like to be a career-ending injury, Dikembe Mutombo laid on the ground tonight for several minutes grasping his knee in pain until being carried off on a stretcher.

In what was an illustrious 18 year career...the 42-year old still hung with the best of them in the league, with staggering defense and an intimidating reach, blocking shots at ease. Initially considered to be a knee sprain, further results and examinations will take place in Houston.

After the game, Mutombo in tears told media that basketball ultimately may be over. "I cried so much about it when I was laying on the floor but when I got in the locker room I decided to be positive and thank God for the wonderful 18 years that I had."

And an amazing, unforgettable 18 years it was.

Mutombo had been named the Defensive Player of the Year 4 times, and had been named to 6 All-Star teams in his career.

aamir, deke upset.jpgDrafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1991, Deke played there for 4 years. In his third season, Mutombo helped Denver be the first 8th seed in the playoffs to defeat a 1st seeded team in the playoffs. Famous footage of this series shows Mutombo falling to the ground holding the ball up in joy and fatigue.

Afterwards, Deke played for the Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets. In 2001, playing with Allen Iverson and the 76ers, Mutombo played in his first NBA Finals appearance, followed by a stint with the New Jersey Nets, both times losing to the Lakers.

Mutombo will likely end his career 2nd in blocks only behind Hakeem Olajuwon.

But Deke wasn't known just for his basketball and that famous finger swag. In 1997, he formed the Dikembo Mutombo Foundation, a humanitarian effort to improve living conditions in his native country, Congo. He has been given countless awards for his efforts by the NBA and other organizations and is a spokesman for the international relief agency, CARE (relief) as well as the first Youth Emissary for the United Nations Development Program.

In honor of his efforts, Mutombo was invited to President George W. Bush's State of the Union Address in 2007 and was referred to as a "son of the Congo" by the former President in his speech, Mutombo later told friends, "My heart was full of joy. I didn't know the President was going to say such great remarks."

While it was clear he had certainly lost a step guarding players like Dwight Howard, Tim Duncan or Amare Stoudemire, Mutombo still held his own with his heart, hustle and undying struggle to succeed.

"Nobody ever thought they'd be carrying the big guy out like a wounded soldier," he said tonight.

A wounded soldier he may be, but in the words of George Herman Ruth, "Heroes are remembered...but legends never die."
