What We've Learned So Far At The NFL Combine

NFL hopefuls draft stock rises and falls based on what NFL coaches, scouts and team executives see on the field turf and hear in the interview rooms at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. It's a big FREAKIN deal. The combine itself is all about money. The players who work out there are in essentially a job interview, auditioning for future employers. With that being said, let's take a look at who helped and hurt themsleves the most sa far at the combine.

Rising:

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee: He enjoyed a standout week at the Senior Bowl in January, and in his meeting with the media over the weekend said all the right things that leads one to believe he is willing to work and make the most of whatever chance he gets.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock likes Ayers so much, he called him the 12th best player on his list.

Pat White, QB, West Virginia: There are some teams who still aren't sold on White as an NFL quarterback, but those who saw his performance during drills over the weekend can't deny the fact that he was very impressive, and might even tempt some team into giving him a shot at quarterback. At the very worst, he has at least convinced teams that he can be a very good asset to have in the ever changing offenses of the NFL.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland: Darrius Heyward-Bey ran the fastest 40-yard dash among wide receivers and running backs at the scouting combine, perhaps even securing a place in the first round of the draft. Considered a fringe first round pick at best with second-round grades, Heyward-Bey seized the moment at the combine with a 4.30 time in the 40. He not only ran well, but performed well in his position drills.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia: Due to the lack of quality QB's at the combine, Stafford's decision not to throw was a big win for him. He will instead throw at his pro day on March 19. He now has a few more weeks to work on the things he knows the scouts will look for. Stafford did look decent in his agiliy drills and ran a decent 40 time.

Brian Robiskie, WR, The Ohio State University: Robiskie ran a respectable 40 (4.5) and showed off his athleticism as well. He even put on a show in the receiver drills, cathcing every ball in sight.

Every offensive tackle not named Andre Smith: This is one story that boggles the mind. Here was Smith, projected by many to be the clear cut best prospect in the draft, opting not to work out because " (He) wasn't prepared". While its not a big deal for players to opt out of participating at the combine, it just a way to do it. All Smith had to do was say that he wasn't going to work out, stand on the sidelines in his sweats and dream about what he was going to do with all that signing bonus money. Now he has raised questions about his work ethic and maturity that has likely cost him millions of dollars.

Falling fast:

James Laurinaitis, LB, The Ohio State University: Laurinaitis ran a slow 40 (4.8) and did nothing to wow the scouts at Indy. While he may be one of the best pure players in the draft, he may now wind up looking like a steal for any team that drafts him in the later portions of the draft.

Brian Cushing, LB, USC: Cushing also ran a slow 40 time (4.7) and didn't perform well in his drills. His name has also been brought up in steroid talks.

Aaron Maybin DE, Penn State: Maybin did his best to get bigger, and stronger for the combine. He just left out the faster part of it. Mayin bulked up to about 250 lbs and did ok on the bench press. But the truth is that this guy is supposed to be a speed rusher, and the last time I checked speed rusher don't run a 4.8 40 time.

The only thing is that top prospects shouldn't go because they get hurt

The 40-yard dash time is irrelevant and I don't know why people continue to rely on this. Some of the greatest players of all time would be lucky to be drafted in the second or third round the way people obsess over a 40 time. When are these clowns going to start drafting based on how well the players PLAY THE GAME?!
