With the deadline for the use of the franchise tag approaching, here are the top 5 NFL free agents. Anything is possible over the next few days, but these are the players that I believe are locks for the upcoming "stupid money" period:
1) Albert Haynesworth DT - There is no doubt that Haynesworth will be the most coveted free agent this offseason. The soon-to-be former Titan is looking for the richest contract for a defensive player in the league and somebody (Lions? Bucs?) will show him the money. He has already announced that he will enter the market, meaning the historically cheap frugal Titans franchise will take a step back towards mediocrity.
2) TJ Houshmandzadeh WR - He's a number two receiver who will be overpaid as a number one option for some team desperate to improve at the position (Eagles and Bears). He's not a gamebreaker, but he can make the tough catch and keep the chains moving. He's a gamble and the potential for him to turn into Peerless Price is very real. Either way he's a winner just for escaping the purgatory known as the Bengals.
3) Ray Lewis LB - With the Ravens set to place the franchise tag on LB Terrell Suggs, there's a pretty good chance Ray-Ray will leave for one last big payday. As great as a player as he has been, I'm not sure that he will have the same impact for a new team. He's been linked mainly to the Jets and Cowboys, but I'm convinced there's a sleeper team waiting to blow money on an aging player (like the Redskins). Whoever picks Ray-Ray up will have to be willing to risk the predicatable decline that will come in the next couple of years.
4) Kurt Warner QB - I'm going to say this off top. I'm tired of listening to this man waffle about what he wants to do. He's waiting on WR Anquan Boldin's situation to play out before making a decision, but if he waits too long, he's going to end up somewhere other than the desert. But even if Boldin leaves, I can't understand why Warner would consider going anywhere else. He's already achieved legendary status for taking the worst NFL over the past 50 years to the Super Bowl. I'm not sure why he would consider moving on to teams like the Bears or Vikings, but if/when the Cardinals screw up the negotiations, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him on a new team.
5) Derick Ward RB - With the franchise given to fellow Giants teammate Brandon Jacobs, Ward could be a sleeper free agent pickup in the same mold as Michael Turner. The usual suspects (Bears, Eagles) are there, but I wouldn't rule out the Bills if Marshawn Lynch gets "Pacmanned" with a 4 game suspension. Another sleeper could be the Broncos.
*6) Darren Sproles/LaDainian Tomlinson RB - I'm throwing this out there because I still have a gut feeling that one of these two players will not be on the Chargers next year. I think Tomlinson's pride will ultimately push him out the door. Sproles will likely be franchised or signed to a nice deal because the Chargers would be stupid to let another starting caliber RB leave without compensation. Honestly I think LT is done no matter who takes a flyer out on him.
