I Don't Care Michael Phelps Smokes Weed & Neither Should You

michael-phelps-smoking-bong.jpg

So Michael Phelps likes to smoke that "Ricky Williams" what is the big deal? It is weed, if it was crack or cocaine that would be one thing, but it is weed and before you go on your "Rob must be a pot head" tangent let me say that I am not a smoker. I mean I have smoked before but that was because of this girl and a bet that involved some Victoria Secret lingerie and a video camera but I digress. The point I am making is this there is a lot more things to worry about in this world than Michael Phelps hitting the bong.

I understand he is a role model and what not, but I will tell parents this if the worst thing you catch your kids doing is puffing the sticky icky consider yourself blessed because it could be worse. Stop using athletes as role models; you don't want your kid to hit the bong talk to them about drugs. I am on record stating that alcohol is much more dangerous than weed and anyone can buy beer even McLovin.

You have to understand when Michael Phelps broke on the scene he was 19 years old. When he became a legend he was 23. Now I need you to remember when you were 23 and nowhere near as famous as Phelps the type of destruction you laid waste to? When I was 23 I was wearing a 10 pound fake platinum and diamond Chinese symbol chain sleeping with any female (which wasn't many) that I could possibly find and doing things that I cannot in good conscious write on this site.

Let the kid live. Yes he made a stupid mistake and that was being photographed. That was the mistake he needs to understand that if you are going to do stuff like this you cannot let people take pictures because they will end up on the net and force me to write an article as oppose to starting my writing vacation that I have planned for months.

There is this uproar that all his sponsors should drop him and that there is a double standard. The double standard is true, but it would be hypocritical of me to state that he should be raked on the coals for something I personally don't think it a big deal. If I did that it would be saying I have a double standard when it comes to athletes when in reality I treat them all to same. The media handling of this isn't surprising they are and always will be bias, so it is my job to cut through the BS and tell you what is fair.

In a perfect world athletes wouldn't get caught smoking weed or get caught driving drunk, but athletes like ordinary people aren't perfect. He manned up admitted it was him when he could have easily lied. That is good enough for me. Michael next time just pass the bong before the picture is taken.

The voice of reason

I'm sorry cuz, if he were a brother he would be crushed.

Me personally I don't care who smokes weed, but if rules state that you can't, then you can't. If you give him a pass for this, you gotta give everybody a pass, all I'm hoping is if another Olympic athlete has the same thing happen, the commissions and media better have the same response.

Not really about black and white. I think we all can agree no one cares if he smokes, but is he getting special treatment

I dont care that he smokes weed either.....I just hate the fact that if he was a black player....that the media would be demanding his head on a platter.

Micheal Phelps as an athelete is a beast. He was the few bright spots for the USA in the last olympics. Micheal Phelps, a weed smoker, blew away every record and came away with what--6? gold medals? So the fact that he did all that kind of blows a huge whole in all the bogus claims about how much weed can mess you up that those stupid "above the influence" commercials keep claiming.

I really hope the USOC doesnt actually try to strip him of his medals or some lame b.s. like that. What he did in Beijing for America is totaly seperate from what he is doing in that picture. If he loses his endorsements then oh well, thats just the way the cookie crumbles. Im just tired of America's ass backward view on weed. Its not as dangerous as alchohol or cigartettes so i dont know why its treated like its dangerous by our criminal justice system. Weed is defintely not a performance enhancing drug (unless your Snoop) so i dont know why they even test atheltes for it. Many young people, including young atheletes, over-induldge in alchohol on college campuses all across this nation and suffer from it; yet who else but the NFL is Budweiser's biggest promoter? The NFL crushed Ricky Williams' career just because he liked to smoke a bowl after practice. Yet they constantly advertise beer to millions of young people and children (because kids LOVE giant horses).

Shon Fields I couldn't agree more especially about the beer and NFL thing. Very hypocritical

Quite honestly I'm going to reserve judgment until we hear about a Black athlete caught smoking weed. As soon as the Joe Buck's and ESPN's start whining, I'll simply invoke the name Michael Phelps.

This is the second public screwup for him. It's interesting that on Dan Patrick's radio show today, Dan asked whether the media was giving him a pass and the overwhelming answer was yes. They avoided bringing race into the debate, but at least one person recognizes the hypocrisy of the situation. Too many people have a vested financial interest in Phelps to condemn him.

End Prohibition.

i've gotta hand it to Phelps for being man enough to acknowledge his actions and apologize -- he's still a decent role model despite the hypocritical media storm

well said Rob. Let my man live.
