NC State has always been one of the biggest champions of cancer research in the country.
The school took a chance on a proud New Yorker several years ago to coach their men's basketball team, who later won a national championship and became one of the more famous faces in the battle against the deadly disease. Rest in peace, Jim Valvano...
On the women's side, Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow battled breast cancer for over 20 years, only to succumb January 24th. She also happened to be one of the greatest coaches in the sport, and a very interesting character. Anyone who had the honor to meet her, such as I, knows that.
This past weekend, State played host to North Carolina in men's basketball, and the school paid tribute to Yow. A mural in her honor was painted in the school's Free Expression Tunnel, which has been a target of students from rival schools to 'get back' at NC State. This one went too far...

More after the jump...
A prank to deface the tunnel just happened to touch many State students. A 'Tar Heel' blue mustache was painted on Yow's face, and the phrase 'Cancer Rules' was added for effect.
Two of the women who painted the mural spoke to the Raleigh News & Observer:
"This is still like her memorial," said Caren Lohr, a senior biology and chemistry major from Trinity in Randolph County. She came to paint the tunnel as part of an annual tradition by her co-ed fraternity. "She was definitely not one to be disrespected like that."
"My granddaddy died of cancer this past year," said Amanda Langdon, an N.C. State senior from Coats in Harnett County, who joined with Lohr to paint the tunnel pink in honor of Yow. "Writing that kind of thing is over the top."
The Free Expression Tunnel has not been without controversy, especially recently. From WWAY in Wilmington,
The tunnel became a lightning rod for controversy late last year after threatening graffiti directed toward then president-elect Barack Obama was found in the tunnel.
At least the Wolfpack community corrected the mural to look normal again, as told by WNCT in Greenville:
The Wolfpack nation plastered pink paint and breast cancer symbols over the defaced areas.
Surveillance cameras are set up on both sides of the tunnel, but campus police don't know if they captured the act.
I will not flat accuse Tar Heel students for defacing the mural, but for whomever did it, what comes around, goes around. Remember that...

One or more starting members of the UNC basketball team will suffer a season-ending injury or the team will lose in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. Karma is a bitch.
