Shawn Kemp's legacy isn't laden with 50 point games, NBA championships, or superstar endorsement deals. He was the template for the highlight-reel dunks that have become a staple for the basketball culture as we know...On the other hand, Kemp was also the prototype for the athletes who would end up fathering children (multiple) by different women.
When Kemp did actually play, he was a force to be reckoned with. He and Gary Payton formed when of the most memorable tandems in history with their flashy style of play. With their successful year being the 95-96 campaign, which ended with defeat to a Jordan-led Chicago Bulls team, Many basketball scholars acknowledge this as the end of Kemp as we knew him.
Kemp was traded the next season due to salary disputes to the Cleveland Cavaliers. During his time as a Cav, he enjoyed the most statistically productive years of his career. It was his score on the scale that contributed to his eventually disappearance from the league.
His years as a Trailblazer and member of the Orlando Magic were also marred with drug problems and weight issues that signaled the apparent end of his career.
Kemp, no stranger to having his work ethic questioned, had a few opportunities to make a comeback, but his off court problems continued to prevent him from capturing his former self.
