But what happened to the "legends" that make this rivalry what it is?
Jay Williams
As one of the most explosive players in College Basketball history, Jay Williams was primed to take the league by storm. He would leave Duke as its sixth highest scorer and one of the most storied players to play in the NCAA. He was drafted second behind Yao Ming in the 2002 draft.
Unfortunately, a motorcycle accident after his rookie year, that almost took his life, cut his career short. After a couple of years of rehab, Williams made solid attempts at getting back into the league, but nothing came to fruition except a stint in the D-League that was ended by injury.
Williams has been doing communications work recently, and has no plans to step back on the court as a player.
Ed Cota
This former ACC Rookie of Year was the floor general for Carolina from 1996 to 2000. He was known for his fun style of play and being a pass first point guard. He currently holds the UNC record for most assist and was the first player in NCAA history to score 1,000 points, and have 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds in a career.
His college success wasnt able to transfer to NBA success, as Cota went undrafted coming out of school. NBA people knocked him for his lack of height and consistent jump shot. Not one to give up, Cota has gone on to enjoy major success overseas in Europe and still has dreams of being in the L. He has played for various Summer League teams since he came out, but has yet to make a roster for the regular season. In my opinion, he has more talent then a lot of point guards in the league, but thats why I blog about sports, and not in the sports business.
William Avery
William Avery had a lot of potential, but he bucked Duke tradition and left school early back in '99. His fellow teammates Elton Brand and Corey Maggette entered the draft, and Avery felt he was ready to make the move as well.
After his three year run with the Timberwolves, he has been playing in Europe since 2002.
Joe Forte
As a Carolina fan, Joe Forte pissed me off. He left school too early, from a developmental standpoint. He was extremely talented and was poised to make a legitimate chance at being one of Carolina's greats. He entered the draft after his sophomore season, and was drafted by the Celtics ahead of couple of players you may recognize : Tony Parker and Gilbert Arenas.
He had a hard time transitioning from a natural 2, to a 1. On top his struggles on the court, his legal problems off the court were a major factor in him not being looked at favorably by people in the League. He has gotten his career back on track by enjoying success in Europe.
Chris Carrawell
The former ACC Men's Basketball player of the year was hell on wheels with the Blue Devils. He was drafted by the Spurs in 2000, and has yet to play in a regular season game. He is well traveled, having played in leagues in Asia, here (ABA), and Europe.
Jason Capel
Jason Capel was a part of a UNC recruiting class that had a lot of hype, but had a hard time in being "legends". He was a starter all four years, and shared time at the small and power forward positions.
He went undrafted in 2002, and has yet to play in an NBA game. Fortunately, he still has his eyes set on making a roster due to his service in the D-League and internationally. Aside from his on court endeavors, he provides play by play commentary for his alma mater.
First of all, I'm a huge fan of BSO. Vince Carter missed dunk is the greatest miss dunk in college history. I remember getting so crunk!! My friends and I talked about that for hours the next day a school.
