Quick question football fans, if Jake Delhomme were black would he be on deck to get cut or enter the trading block? Seriously, what has he done since the Carolina Panthers bulldozed their way into Super Bowl XXXVIII? Hear me out before you lose your mind. Kyle Boller blew several years as the Baltimore Raven's starting QB. How long did it take for him to develop into nothing. Has the Rams drafted a QB of the future yet? Marc Bulger has been on his last leg for 4 years. Will Tony Romo get thrown under the bus by T.O.? After all how many playoff games have they won since he's been starting. And last but not least, why the hell is Carson Palmer still a 95 overall on Madden 2009? I forgot he was in the league. It's still out there, nobody wants to admit it. Racism in the media and front office.
Now lets compare and contrast each white QB to their black counterpart that hasn't receiving a fair shot by the media, fans, video gaming industry, and even black folks that are ignorant to the reality that football is still a EXTREMELY racist sport. Let's begin with Jake Delhomme. Delhomme has 1 SB appearance, losing to the New England Patriots. Since then he has seen the playoffs 2 other times with the most recent being the nickel he put up Saturday. He has a top 5 receiver on his team that makes up for several bad throws that should be interceptions. He has fairly decent career stats with 115 touchdowns and 76 interceptions in the same offensive scheme and coaching staff but he's 34 years old. Let's move on to former NFL MVP Steve McNair who opted to retire rather than play with diminished skills. He has a career 174 touchdowns and 119 interceptions WITHOUT EVER HAVING A PRO BOWL RECEIVER (Frank Wychek was a tight end). He had possibly the most heroic SB 4th quarter drives ending in "The Tackle". In his 13 year career without having a legit number one receiver, he never threw 5 interceptions in a game. Oh and he's only 35 a year older than Delhomme.
Kyle Boller was drafted to the Baltimore Ravens and was tagged the QB of the future. In the first round the nineteenth pick of the 2003 draft Kyle Boller was the second QB taken that year. He started the first 9 games of his career and posted a 5-3 record throwing 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. You think the defense had something to do with that? Please believe it. The Ravens had back to back defensive players of the year during his tenure as their starting QB, Ed Reed (2004) and Ray Lewis (2003) that are still his teammates to this day. Also to this date he has started in 42 games for the Ravens over a 5 year span. He has 45 touchdown passes to match 44 interceptions and 19 lost fumbles. Now let's move to Tavaris Jackson. Jackson, a second round pick out of Alabama State, Brad Childress drafted him as a "diamond in the rough" displays flashes of brilliance when given opportunity on the field. Often referred to as a right handed accurate Michael Vick he has received far less of a developmental chance than Kyle Boller even with their similarities. Both played with phenomenal defenses. Both with star RB's in their respective eras. The difference? The Vikings were quick to bench Jackson rather than develop him as thorough as the Ravens did Boller. And who can argue that he doesn't deserve a chance to start for them next season after the stretch run he had going into the playoffs, posting 8 touchdowns and 1 interception during the pivotal 4 game stretch to battle the Vikes into the playoffs.
That leads us to Marc Bulger. You know him. He's the guy that inherited the Greatest Show on Turf when Kurt Warner was forced out of St. Louis (the jokes on yall). I dont know where to begin. Marc Bulger is Marc Bulger, an overrated QB that should not be in the league. Period. He has had an all-pro player every year he has been in the league to assist him; Marshall Faulk, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Steven Jackson, etc. so excuses are not valid to make for him. He has a 22 interception season with nearly the same team Warner won the SB with. His career has been plagued with injuries and it's everyone elses fault. But yet the Rams haven't drafted a Kevin Kolb or signed a free agent as a insurance policy. Oh yeah he did get benched for old ass Trent Green in week 4 that got then head coach Scott Lenahan fired. So where's Byron Leftwich? Try under the bench in Pittsburgh. The seventh overall pick of the 2003 draft is riding the bench after a promising career in Jacksonville ended bitterly but justifiably so. He then traveled to Atlanta under turmoil and a terrible coaching staff. Through his career he has also been riddled with injuries but still stands tall in the pocket, remember him being carried by linemen Steve Sciullo and Steve Perretta, after breaking his shin and returning to the game in the GMAC Bowl? Although he has suffered injuries throughout his career, i know we haven't seen the best of Byron Leftwich. I do know that we've seen the best of Marc Bulger though.
Speaking of injuries, is Carson Palmer still in the league? If so, why is he still a 95 overall on the Madden 09 updated rosters with a 95 in arm strength and a 97 in accuracy? How do they know? Carson Palmer has 3 excellent recievers that we all know and love. Two of them will be hot commodities this coming off season. We will see what he does without them. Hold on, he posted a 20 interception season last year with them on his roster. Not to mention an outstanding record for a white QB of 34 wins and 34 loses. Im sure if he were Daunte Culpepper they'd been asking for his head on a platter or ran Chad or Whos-your-mama out of Cincy by now.
And that leaves me to Terrell Owens' favorite QB Tony Romo. He leads "White" America's team, filled with a star at every position. EVERY POSITION. He has the best offense I've seen since the Cowboys of the 90's. He's been a Pro Bowler on a Pro Bowl team since he began starting. Hall of Fame receiver (Uncle Tom Owens), hall of fame line (try all 5), hall of fame help in the booth (Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith and their abuse of media to advise Jerry Jones to get certain players), Pro Bowlers and All-Pro, have not benefited him thus far. And through it all, ask me how many playoff wins does he have? The same amount Tavaris Jackson and Byron Leftwich have in their playoff appearances with far less talent, ZERO.
You know, I may be speaking bias myself because I want to see my people get treated better at the QB position. I also understand something that many other blacks that enjoy football don't, not only are they rooting against black QB's we are rooting against them also. It will continue on into the next generation with the Trent Edwards/ Jamarcus Russell debate. January 20 we inaugurate a black president finally, hopefully February 1st we will be crowning our second as the Super Bowl winning QB. And hopefully blacks will be rooting for him.

maybe you didn't want to go for the obvious example in this article. but donovan mcnabb could have been this article. i sort of see where you're coming from but i think there's a difference b/w delhomme and mcnair. delhomme had a really crappy game. no question. mcnair was hurt...A LOT. and while he might be one yr older than delhomme, his body is probably a lot older.
as for tarvaris jackson and kyle boller: they both stink. there's something to be said about being drafted in the 1st rd vs the 2nd, mainly money. there's more of an incentive to stick w/ someone making 1st rd money b/c you can't get the money back. and let's not forget that jackson actually started in his playoff game this yr. boller (who was benched for mcnair) wasn't starting his. flacco was.
leftwich: probably more hype than talent was replaced by a black qb.
palmer and culpepper: ??????????? i don't know what happened to those 2. totally confused.
romo: i think he has to stick around b/c TO is still working off that karma. and dallas is a complete mess, which delights me to no end.
and i can't cheer for mcnabb. the (still extremely bitter) giants blue that runs thru my veins won't allow it.
This isn't going to end well. I'll play the devil's advocate here.
We all know that white athletes are categorically given the benefit of the doubt while black athletes are forced to "prove" themselves time and again. No matter what kind of stats you post, it's not going to change the perception of these athletes by the mainstream media. The media is controlled by whites and they are going to, either conciously or subconciously, give more favorable treatment to their own.
With that said, it's equally unfair to cast a blanket of racism around a group of people or an entire sport. I don't know how old you are, but if you think the NFL is racist because of what you are seeing TODAY, then you haven't really seen much. The NFL today is probably the most inclusive American sport today. The QB position may be in a state of flux as it pertains to Black athletes, but let's not go overboard. Many Black QB's that are still in the game today have not produced on a consistent basis (Jackson, Young, etc). The most consistent Black QB today is Donovan McNabb, who is viewed more as an enigma by just about everyone. I'm not making excuses, but in order for the perception to change, we need more Black QB's with consistent numbers like McNabb than flash in the pan seasons like Culpepper.
The last point is something you may not agree with, but I don't think we should waste energy seeking acceptance by the mainstream media. We cannot change the minds of those who are determined to think a certain way about Black athletes. You spoke of Steve McNair earlier. I feel that he is a Hall of Famer because of the success that he had while playing with more injuries than you could count. He was always overshadowed by Favre, Manning, and others because he kept a low profile in an even lower profile market. Regardless of whether he is publicly recognized as such by the mainstream, I will always view McNair as a Hall of Fame player, stats be damned.
test
I have another one for you where is Aaron Brooks career 80+ rating threw for over 3,000 yards every year in NO except after Katrina and he is not in the league at all. Where did Adrian McPherson go yeah he got a real shot. What about Omar Jacobs did he get a real shot, Rohan Davey what happened to him the list goes on and on.
I am going to be honest I am on the fence with this one.
But great for discussions
i dunno kno about all that... jason campbell, david garrard, mcnabb all got madden love this season too. Marc Bulger is trash but if Leftwhich could show teams he would be able to stay on the field for a complete season he would have a starting job somewhere. How could you compare Carson to Culpepper you're out of your mind. Racisms still alive and i ain't mad atchu for writin about it but lets be real here. You talkin bout tavaris jackson, he didn't do a goddamn thing to show he should be a starter. Boller didn't do it either and the Ravens were fools for leavin him in that long. All this being said i think Mcnabb is the most underated quarterback in football. Every year he's a beasty quarterback with limited recieving options, the one year he had a reciever (t.o) what happened? superbowl. btw why u callin him uncle tom owens? that don't make no kinda sense white people hate him. you probably think they didn't give akili smith and quincy carter a fair shake too eh?
Well i definitely see where you coming from on this one. I think racism still does exists but just not as overtly as you describe it. The mainstream media defintely treats black and white atheletes differently. But i do think that black qbs are treated much better than they were when i was growing up. Im 31 years old, grew up in southern cali. I can vividly remember the days when you could count the number of black qbs on one hand-- Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham and that was all we had to look up to. But its nice to see that these days theres an average of 10 starting black qbs. Now we can see brothas at every position on the team (except kicker and punter but who cares). But on the other hand the case of the Ravens does backup your argument here. And i completely agree about Carson Palmer. I cant understand how he didnt get benched and i also dont get why several white Qbs are even still in the league. Did you know that after the disaster of Ryan Leaf in San Diego the Cowboys actually signed him and even let him wear the star? Ok now im gonna uncle tom on ya: what ever happened to white running backs? LOL!
White running backs indeed. And the same with black politicians.
Race isn't nearly as big a factor in QBs as personal preference and perception is. Use some historical analysis. Two QBs that were discriminated against in the 1980s, Doug Flutie (height) and Warren Moon (race, size). Flutie didn't get his NFL shot until it was after success in USFL and CFL, and Moon eventually got a NFL gig and had a great career. Both were perceived and labelled incorrectly early on.
You can name a black QB and a white counterpart and vice versa down the line for every QB you think should've "gotten a shot" and everyone that was allowed to "stay around too long."
The only one I don't agree with is the Adrian McPherson comment. NFL teams don't need a thief and a criminal in the locker room.
Also, when is the last team a white receiver went all Anquan Boldin on the sideline and in the press conference? I fully realize ESPN and other media provokes such comments to make headlines (see: Favre and T.O. among others) but his performance was sad.
what is more racist blacksportsoline? Where is the whitesports online at?
This stupid, however you do make good points but it's not race.
this article is right on. i have been saying this for so long now. its not just the qb position either. whenever a black athlete (Chad Johnson) want to get more money or have contract issues they are greedy. but when white athletes (Brian Urlacher) wants to negotiates, its give him the money, he deserves it. Vince Young has won games since he came into the league. but everyone says he is no good. now he cant even compete for his job. his stats are not that good. but neither was Ben Roethlisberger's stats(17td's 15int's 24th rated qb in the league) and he is considered elite and he get credit for winning when we all know the defense wins those games. racism will never die because it is done subconsciously and people don't even know they are doing it.
Although your topics are interesting and pretty accurate. Race has nothing to do with it. Most quarterbacks that are drafted out of college have a hard time making in the NFL. That is why some quarterbacks such as Jeff Garcia are still in this league with limited to no talent. Tavaris Jackson is a prime example of a wasted draft pick. He has the best running back in the league and can't find a way to throw a 6 yard drop. Do you think it is because of race or the talent is not there? In this day an age it is time to grow up and let this race issue die.
