First, let's look at the facts. L.T. has been hurt the past two years. As we all know, he was not able to go for the Chargers playoff game against the Steelers on Sunday. Tomlinson will also be 30 in June.
Tomlinson is also scheduled to count $8.97 million against San Diego's salary cap next season. But if they released or traded Tomlinson, the Chargers would eseentially free up $6.725 million worth of salary-cap space. That's a big number for a team that would like to re-sign free-agent-to-be RB Darren Sproles and also will try to re-sign its QB, Philip Rivers, to a long-term extension.
However, noting the the track record recently of the San Diego front office makes the trade or release of L.T. a real possibility. Considering the way the Chargers dismissed Schottenheimer after he turned the Chargers into a talented winning team for Norv Turner of all people just adds fuel to this fire.
Personally, I feel that he's one of the best running backs of all-time, and unless his injuries carry over to next year, I see no reason to release or trade him. As good as Sproles is, I'd still take L.T. over him. Sproles would not have been as successful now had he have to carry the load over an entire season. The NFL is starting to go to a two back system and that may benefit the Chargers if they decide to go that way as well.
They need to, he's the best REGULAR SEASON running back in the league. When it comes to the playoffs he seems to not show up at all. Trade him, get someone you can use and move on.

OK first off i live in San Diego. Here is San Diego there is one jersey that consistently sells more then even Tony Gwynn jerseys did back in the 90s and that's #21. The Chargers are not ready to let him go...YET. Other than making the playoffs the team owners and manager needs to sell tickets. And lets face it, LT puts butts in seats. Another reason he would not go anywhere is because they have no other solid options at his position. Yes Darren Sproles showed up big time in some games. But I don't believe he can carry the the load on his own for a whole season. The only backup to LT that was capable of doing that is now playing for Atlanta. I agree that that the Chargers need (or should have already) to go to a 2-back running system. Now the only scenario where i see LT leaving is if he demands more than the chargers are willing to pay because he objects to splitting his carries because he thinks he is still a feature back. Either way the Chargers are in trouble because their window of opportunity to make it to the Superbowl is closing if it hasn't already closed in Pittsburgh.
