What is ironic about the former all-stars tenure in the NBA, is that on Tuesday, he was released by the Grizzlies. Yeah, those Grizzlies. The same Grizzlies that drafted him back in '99, and his gratitude for receiving the opportunity to live out hoop dreams was displayed by him crying at the draft.
So what can be said about his legacy?
Francis was an explosive player, but always ended up being a problem on whatever team he was on. He was always apart of "blockbuster trades" that saw him happy at one point, but when things werent going his way, he was quickly on the trade block.
With most players, you see a gradual decline in their performance. I think with Francis, he just disappeared. I can not remember the last time I saw him on the court. Many folks were not aware (including me) that he was even on the Rockets roster in the midst of them forming a championship caliber team. He was sacrificed earlier this season as a luxury tax move, which saw him return to the same team that he embarrassed 10 years ago.
Id hate to give Francis a premature burial, but is he done? He hasn't clocked any significant minutes in almost two years, and many people in the basketball world doubt that he can recapture the career that seemed to be taking off. With the season at the midway point, will he rise again? Will he be that missing piece to someone's championship puzzle?
Probably not, but with this economy, many teams may jump at the chance to buy Francis, and get Cuttino Mobley free.
