It's 2008. America has elected her first African American President. And there is a change of guards in boxing. Joe Calzaghe has seemingly cemented his place in history with his victory over Roy Jones Jr.
It was fight night, and this Roy Jones fan was ecstatic! I was all gung ho for the one last glimpse of the "magnificent" Roy. The Roy that can defy all odds and make one more dramatic fight. The cocky, self-assured Roy who truly feels he's Mr. Unstoppable, Mr. Undroppable, Mr. Invincible, Mr. Unbeatable, and Mr. Unknockoutable. But instead, I saw the Roy that I fear. I saw the Roy that can no longer be truly magnificent. The Roy that cannot defy good old Father Time. I saw the Roy that needs to go ahead and admit, that yes, his time has come. That it's time to hang the gloves up and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
All that being said you can take nothing away from Calzaghe. He had a fight plan and he stuck with it. Sure we can say a pre-heavyweight Roy probably would have beaten Calzaghe easily, but Roy chose to fight Calzaghe now and as they say, it is what it is. Calzaghe was the more active fighter. The fighter that wanted to win and seal tight his legacy. Many of us may not truly appreciate the "slapping" style of Calzaghe, but hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it! His ability to throw such a volume of punches and maintain his stamina is what has always gotten Calzaghe the W on the score cards. Congratulations Joe, and this is from a die hard Roy fan. You beat the man to be the man and that's exactly what you had to do.
So now we will probably begin to see the changing of the guards. Calzaghe says he's going to retire. I hope and pray that Roy retires. I don't think I can take heartache like this. Oscar has maybe one more fight in him. Shane is about at that point as well. Winky just can't buy a big fight. Bernard, as sharp as he looked the other night, just can't hang on much longer. Those "BIG" named fighters of this era that we've grown up with and watched over the years are beginning to see their flame go out. We will now watch the new guard begin to form and shape. The Dawsons, Cottos and Bertos. Who will rise to take command?
I for one can't wait to see the next great fighter. The next history book maker! Roy, I love you, I truly do, but it's time.....for a change.
I hope he doesn't retire.Roy should get another big fight to redeem himself.Go out winning not losing.
Good job, Tina. You echo'd the sentiments of many such as myself. Roy had a great career but let his ego surpass his skills. His jump in weight and inactivity caught him about as flush as the punch by Tarver in their 2nd fight.
