Personally, he was not my first choice for the cover. If I were going to put an NBA player on the cover of Time Magazine, I would've chosen Kobe Bryant because of the year he had despite falling short in the NBA Finals.
Then I realized that would be controversial, and, well, Time Magazine doesn't want to go there. That being said, I don't agree that he's the athlete to watch in the Beijing Olympics. I would've chosen Michael Phelps to see if he can make history or another individual that is not in a team-sport featured in the Olympics. The thing is LeBron is part of a basketball TEAM, which is great, but if you wanted to feature the Team USA basketball team, well feature the entire team on the cover. That would show a great sense of unity for not only Team USA but for our country in supporting them.
The NBA gets the attention from the general public for most of the calendar year. The Olympics is once every four years. I think it would have been better to feature a swimmer or a runner or some other athlete in an individual sport for the cover shot instead of LeBron James.
On the bright side, at least this is nowhere near as controversial as that Vogue cover shot with Gisele a few months ago.

you may want to look up the word team. that swimmer and runner is also on a team. i don't disagree with you but if you have a problem with just Lebron on the cover the entire track team or swimming team would have to be on the cover not just one of them.
I see what you mean but there's a difference. There are individual events with swimmers and runners. That can't be said for basketball especially when Lebron is not the only major star on that team.

the only difference is there may not be 5 in the pool at one time or 5 on the track at one time but there may be several in the pool competing or several running track at one time. if you tell any of those swimmers or track & field athletes they are not considered a team because they are not competing with 5 people in the pool or on the track at one time they will be very upset. again i do see where you are coming from also.
