In this era of college basketball players pursuing dollars rather than completing their degrees, Rookie of the Year front-runner Kevin Durant and his teammate Jeff Green have decided to put their careers on hold and go back to school.
In a Seattle Times article, Durant makes the statement, "Even though I love the game, I can't play forever and you can't do nothing without the degree." He added, "So I got to get it sooner or later. It's going to take a while, but I'd rather it take a while than not having one."
That the two Supersonics focus on post-NBA life is commendable.
One thing I have noticed about Durant is that he isn't really caught up in the hype of being a highly-regarded player in the league. He remains humble and it is apparent that right now, he is content with where he is at. Maintaining focus on their education is something that the mainstream media rarely celebrates.
I was in high school when Vince Carter caught slack for attending his graduation, which for a young black male in today's society is a very important moment. It was ridiculous for him to face the criticism that he did. I don't think VC's receiving his degree that day had an effect on the shot that he barely missed.
Now, with their decision, I am ready to see how much hell Durant and Green will catch. Going back to school means no summer league for them. The critics will bring up the fact that with these guys, being rookies, should be traveling with the team to Orlando this summer for the tournament. Last time I checked, Summer League isn't that important for guys who are guaranteed roster spots. Sure it would be nice for them to gel with other potential teammates during those few weeks. However, I thought that off-season workouts and training camps were for that purpose. Plus, Durant and Green aren't being caught up in the organizational politics going on between the City of Seattle, the League, and Oklahoma City. They know their role, and that is as players.
My hat goes off to the Durant and Green. Keep up the good work. You two just earned a lifetime fan. Just don't end up like JR Rider.

That is a good look
